How to Properly Store Cannabis Seeds

The question of proper storage conditions, storage duration, and seed viability often arises among beginner growers. To preserve cannabis seeds and extend their lifespan, it’s important to remember and follow a few key rules: cannabis seeds prefer a dark, cool place, and it’s best to store hemp seeds in airtight containers.

 

In the Freezer

Some inexperienced growers believe that storing seeds in the freezer is the best method to keep them viable for a long time. However, it’s important to remember that the freezing process can cause random but instant ruptures in the seed’s cellular structure. For this reason, recommendations about storing cannabis seeds in a freezer are often accompanied by warnings about possible damage or partial loss of viability. It’s not worth risking it — there are many other, more effective ways to store your marijuana seeds without causing harm. Still, if you decide to use a freezer, pay attention to modern, specially designed lab-grade freezing systems that allow slow freezing of the seed’s cellular tissue.

If you want to use your freezer to store cannabis seeds, place them in a vacuum-sealed, airtight container before putting them in the freezer.

In the Refrigerator

The refrigerator is a suitable place for storing cannabis seeds, but caution is needed — humidity levels in such conditions can be too high, which may lead to seed degradation or loss.

If you plan to store your seeds in the fridge, make sure to seal them in an airtight, vacuum container to prevent moisture buildup and help preserve the viability of your cannabis seeds.

Hemp seeds can be stored in the refrigerator for many years. Experienced breeders and growers report that under refrigerator conditions and with proper humidity control, seeds can remain viable for more than 8–10 years. However, it’s worth noting that very long storage periods may slow germination rates and reduce the overall sprouting percentage.

At Room Temperature

Storing marijuana seeds at room temperature, in a dark place (such as a cupboard), for up to two years is acceptable. However, prolonged storage of cannabis seeds under such conditions will likely lead to a gradual loss of their viability.
